The history of Newtown Township, commonly known as Newtown Square, is rich and spans several centuries. Established in 1684, the township was one of the earliest areas settled in Pennsylvania. The majority of early settlers were Welsh Quakers. Newtown Square was primarily a farming community in the 18th century, with the development of blacksmith and wheelwright shops, as well as taverns and inns for travelers and local patrons.

During the Revolutionary War, Newtown Township was near the outpost and headquarters of General Potter and visits by British Army foraging parties were common. Mills emerged along Crum Creek and Darby Creek in the 19th century, including saw mills, paper mills, shingle mills, and a woolen factory/ These mills contributed to local industry and employment.

The introduction of trolley service in the mid-1890s marked significant development, complementing the existing agricultural character of the community. By this time, Newtown Square had transformed into a suburban community, with old stone homes and structures still visible today as reminders of its past. Five sites in Newtown are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Hood Octagonal School, Bartram’s Covered Bridge, Old St. David’s Church, Square Tavern, and Paper Mill House, emphasizing its historical significance.

Newtown Square has been home to a number of notable people.
